To get to Pompeii from Naples, you can take a Trenitalia commuter train, which costs just over €3 and takes only 40 minutes. Trains run quite frequently throughout the day, so you don't have to worry too much about timetables, and you can buy your ticket at the Piazza Garibaldi station in Naples.
The best stop is Porta Marina, as it is the closest to the entrance to the archaeological site of Pompeii. Although this option is easy, quick and economical, there is nothing like taking an organised tour to really soak up all the history that the ruins of Pompeii have to tell.
