Step by Step

Step back in time and uncover Seattle's fascinating past on this captivating underground tour. Led by a local guide, you'll delve into the origins and evolution of the Emerald City during an engaging walking experience designed for small groups of approximately 20 people, lasting about an hour.

Following the devastating Great Seattle Fire of 1889, residents seized the opportunity to rebuild and raise their city from the ashes. Known as the birthplace of Seattle and proudly recognized as its "first neighborhood," Pioneer Square is a treasure trove of history, both beneath the streets and above ground.

As you explore, your guide will share fascinating stories spanning decades of underground life: from the stampede to the Yukon gold fields and Seattle's pivotal role in the Klondike Gold Rush. You'll also learn about the Coast Salish people, the indigenous inhabitants who first settled in the Seattle area.

While much of the experience takes place underground, you'll also head back to the surface to compare past and present and discover the vibrant history of today's Pioneer Square.

Above ground, admire the square lined with turn-of-the-century lampposts and a striking Tlingit totem pole standing beside a fountain featuring a bust of Chief Seattle. As a bonus, this historic district has also become a hotspot for art lovers and foodies alike.

It was our first time in Seattle and we took this tour for fun, but we were impressed with how much the guide knew. He was very informative and we ended up learning a lot as well.

It's a bit obvious that not all of the city will be underground, but it was great!

My two young children are suspense lovers, I chose this tour to surprise them and it couldn't have been better! They were amazed, they didn't stop talking about the tour until days later.
