Step by Step

This guided tour lasts approximately 2 hours and will allow you to discover the essentials of Cordoba. During the Arab domination it was the capital of Al-Andalus and traces of this glorious past can still be seen. The tour starts from a central location in the city, passes through the old Jewish quarter and reaches the splendid Alcazar de los Reyes Cristianos (Fortress of the Christian Monarchs).

The Jewish Quarter stretches between the Almódovar Gate, the Episcopal Palace and the Mosque. An important Jewish community lived here until the Catholic Monarchs decreed their expulsion from the peninsula. It is a labyrinth of narrow streets and low houses whose courtyards are decorated with colourful flowers. Here you will also find the Zoco, the city's old market, which still houses traditional craft stalls.

In all of Spain, only three synagogues built before 1492 remain, and one of them is in Cordoba. It dates from the 14th century and is characterised by its Mudejar decoration. To access it, you have to cross a small courtyard where there is a fountain for the ablution of hands and feet.

Another landmark is the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos, a building with purely military functions. It served as a strategic military outpost for the Catholic rulers before they set out to conquer another important city in the region: Granada. However, the architecture and beautiful gardens bear witness to its Muslim past. It is not for nothing that the palace stands on the site of an ancient Moorish fortress.
