Step by Step

With these tickets to the Tasmanian Devil Unzoo, you’ll discover a conservation initiative designed to move away from the traditional concept of a zoo. The site combines natural habitats, walking trails and encounters with local wildlife, allowing you to get to know animals native to Tasmania in an environment that aims to foster an experience closer to nature.

The main stars are, of course, the Tasmanian devils. You’ll be able to watch them during their feeding sessions and learn more about their behaviour and the projects aimed at protecting their populations. You’ll also have the chance to get up close to other native animals such as kangaroos, pademelons, rosellas and other wild birds, with various presentations scheduled throughout the day.

The experience goes far beyond the animals. You can stroll through the Tasmanian Native Botanical Gardens, where you’ll find various plant species native to the island, observe wild birds from the viewing areas, and visit spaces showcasing Tasmanian artwork.

Admission also contributes to the Tasmanian devil conservation programmes, one of the park’s main missions. It is recommended that you allow between one and a half and two hours to enjoy your visit, although you can stay longer if you wish to attend several shows and explore the grounds at your leisure.

If you’re in the Port Arthur area, it’s well worth a stop. You’ll learn a lot and see animals that aren’t easy to come by.

The site is easy to get round with a pushchair, which was brilliant for us. The children paid attention almost the whole time.

A lovely visit that respects the environment. I thought the pademelons were adorable; I’d never seen them before.

I liked the educational aspect, although I’d have liked to see a bit more movement from some of the animals. Even so, we left feeling happy.
