Step by Step
On this excursion, you’ll have the opportunity, over the course of around 9 hours, to visit the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, as well as to climb to the summit of the volcano that destroyed them. You’ll be accompanied by an expert guide, from whom you’ll learn a wealth of interesting facts about the history, architecture and natural features of the places you’ll visit.
Both Pompeii and Herculaneum are famous for having been destroyed by a volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius, which took place in 79 AD. Both cities were buried under ash and have survived the passage of time. Today, they are the largest and most important archaeological sites in Europe.
As you stroll through the streets of both Pompeii and Herculaneum, you can admire the well-preserved Roman-era buildings, as well as a multitude of objects and bodies that were petrified beneath the ash. Thanks to this, you’ll be able to learn about the details of everyday life for the Romans during the 1st century.
In Pompeii, some of the highlights include the Forum, the centre of the city’s commercial life; the Lupanar, Pompeii’s main brothel; and the Temple of Jupiter, a sanctuary dedicated to the Roman god. Also of note are the city’s Stabian Baths, which date back to the 4th century BC.
In Herculaneum, you can also stroll through its streets and discover some of its most popular sites. These include the city’s thermal baths, a place for bathing and socialising, and the Gymnasium, a large complex dedicated to sporting activities. Also well-known are the Theatre of Herculaneum and the many houses belonging to wealthy citizens of the time.
Once you’ve seen both archaeological sites, you’ll continue the excursion to Vesuvius National Park, where you can climb to the top of the mountain. The summit of the volcano, which is still active, stands at an altitude of around 1,200 metres. From the top, you’ll be able to gaze out over the Bay of Naples and enjoy views of the Tyrrhenian coast.
If you do not wish to climb to the summit, you can wait for your group at a rest area.
Reviews
- HH.My children got a bit tired with the tour, I think it is not so much for children or teenagers. We still had a great time and they were enthusiastic about some of the stories. I was very surprised by Herculaneum, Pompeii is unforgettable with its history and architecture preserved in spite of everything!
- AA.All in ten.
- SS.I didn't know about Herculaneum, it made me think a lot about the force of nature!
- MM.I liked it above all because the tour had just enough time to get to know and see all the places visited. Mount Vesuvius I think scared me a little with its imposing and ancient history. Everything was great to say the truth.
